SBGW303

Views of majestic Mount Iwate, the highest mountain in the northern Japanese Iwate prefecture, inspire the Takumi craftsmen and women from the large windows of Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, where Grand Seiko mechanical timepieces are precisely handcrafted. Since ancient times, the Japanese have appreciated the subtle beauty within the nuances of light and shadow and their natural effects within the passage of time. Whilst light and shadow are considered contrasting in the West, Japan finds beauty in their coexistence, maximizing this within design from fine art to architecture.

Features

A Grand Seiko timepiece inspired by the autumn scenery of Mount Iwate at dusk

In autumn, the slopes of Mount Iwate assume a complex color palette, where deep forest green mixes with the yellows, reds, and oranges of the autumnal foliage. At dusk, the mountain becomes illuminated by the fading “Day Light” of the setting sun, causing a mysterious effect - the dark grey-green dial of SBGW303 expresses this particular moment in time. The patterned dial, which represents the ridged contours of Mount Iwate, further accentuates the crepuscular scene of autumn dusk. Another feature of this view –”Night Light” caused by the moon– is captured on the dial. When the sun begins to sink towards the west, the moon is still white, but its light gradually takes on a greater intensity and eventually turns a dazzling golden color. Just as the word “moon” is known in haiku as a seasonal word for autumn, there is an ancient Japanese tradition of appreciating the autumn moon. The radiant gold Grand Seiko logo on the SBGW303 symbolizes this moon. The timepiece is powered by the in-house Caliber 9S64, manual-winding mechanical movement. The distortion-free mirrored finish on the case is achieved through Zaratsu polishing by skilled Takumi artisans, and the multi-faceted indexes and hour and minute hands enhance legibility, bringing to life the myriad expressions of light and shadow in every detail.
