History
It was the determination to excel that brought about the birth of Grand Seiko in 1960.
During its development and ever since, the idea that drove the designers and engineers was that Grand Seiko should be the ideal watch with standards of precision, durability, legibility and beauty that would lead the world.
2000-2019
The unique 9R Spring Drive movement was introduced, and the 9S mechanical movement underwent further evolution.
2004

9R6 series
The innovative 9R Spring Drive movement, which uses the unwinding power of a mainspring and precisely controls accuracy with a crystal oscillator and IC, was introduced. It achieved an average accuracy of ±15 seconds per month (equivalent to ±1 second per day) and realized a 72-hour power reserve. It was also notable for the smooth and silent glide of its seconds hand.
2007

9R8 series
Grand Seiko’s first chronograph was powered by a new Spring Drive movement with a vertical clutch mechanism. It was developed with the goal of creating the most accurate and reliable spring-driven chronograph.
2009

9S85
Caliber 9S85 was the first new high-beat movement from Grand Seiko in around 40 years. The key components that influence accuracy were re-examined and re-designed, achieving the high torque necessary for high frequency and excellent power reserve.
2014

9S86
Caliber 9S86 combined high-beat accuracy with a GMT function while maintaining the performance of the 9S85. It featured a high-beat frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour and a 24-hour display (GMT function). SBGJ005 won the "Petite Aiguille" Prize at the 2014 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève.
2016

9R01
Caliber 9R01 was the first-ever Grand Seiko Spring Drive movement crafted by the Micro Artist Studio, achieving a long power reserve of up to 8 days (192 hours).
2017

Brand Independence
The "Grand Seiko" logo was introduced at the 12 o'clock position on the dial, as Grand Seiko became independent from Seiko and began a new chapter in its history.
2019

9S63
Grand Seiko introduced its first manual-winding movement with a small seconds hand at the 9 o'clock position and power reserve indicator.

9S2 series
The 9S2 series debuted in 2018 with the limited Caliber 9S25. Caliber 9S27 succeeded it a year later as the brand’s mainstay small-size movement with the same specifications. The gear train layout and the main parts were designed from scratch to achieve excellent performance with an accuracy of +8 to -3 seconds per day and a power reserve of 50 hours.

9R02
The manual-winding Spring Drive Caliber 9R02, created by the Micro Artist Studio, was debuted with beautiful finishing by skilled artisans, the Torque Return System, and two mainsprings set in parallel within a single barrel for an 84-hour power reserve.
