MOVEMENT
Grand Seiko is a true manufacturer that handles all aspects, from movement development to design, manufacturing, assembly, adjustment, inspection and shipping.
We use three types of movements: mechanical "9S" caliber, spring-driven "9R" caliber and quartz "9F" caliber, each of which features the number "9," which is associated with the Japanese word for “ultimate.” This number symbolizes our pledge to bring users the ultimate experience in terms of watches.
Let us introduce to you some carefully selected models that incorporate these three types of movements.
- 9SMechanical
- 9RSpring Drive
- 9FQuartz
9S Mechanical
The concept of Grand Seiko was born from the desire to build the world's best watch, and the collection continues to push precision in mechanical watches to the limits of timekeeping technology.
As a true manufacture, Grand Seiko combines the latest technology with its long experience in craftsmanship to raise the art of watchmaking to new heights.
The task of assembling each Grand Seiko watch is carried out by craftsmen and women who have honed their craft to such an extent that they can adjust parts by hand to tolerances of one hundredth of a millimeter. It is the combination of high technology and this skilled craftsmanship that ensures the very precise timekeeping of each 9S mechanical movement.
Manual-winding Mechanical Hi-Beat 36000 80 Hours
Caliber 9SA4
Striving to create the ultimate hand-winding experience.
Hi-Beat 36000 3-Day Chronograph
Caliber 9SC5
In 2023, Grand Seiko's first mechanical chronograph, the Tentagraph, was born.
A high-beat chronograph that symbolizes the next generation of Grand Seiko watchmaking, the Tentagraph Caliber 9SC5 has 72 hours of power reserve (approximately 3 days) even when the chronograph function is in operation, making it the ten-beat chronograph with the longest power reserve in the industry today.
9R Spring Drive
Spring Drive is a unique watch technology. It generates energy like every other luxury mechanical watch but combines this with an electronic regulator to deliver a level of precision that no mechanical watch can match.
The development of Spring Drive was possible because Grand Seiko is one of the very few manufacturers with mastery of both electronic and mechanical watchmaking.
Manual-winding 8-Day Power Reserve Spring Drive
Caliber 9R01
By 2014, Spring Drive had proven its worth as a mechanism and was widely appreciated as a significant advance in watchmaking. The Grand Seiko team were proud of what had been achieved but sought to make further advances. All Spring Drive movements already offered a remarkable 72 hours of power reserve. The challenge was clear. Could this be extended still further?
The team at the Micro Artist Studio in Shio-jiri in the mountains of central Japan thought so and the Grand Seiko 8-Day Spring Drive (Caliber 9R01) is the result.
Caliber 9R01 was the first Grand Seiko Spring Drive movement to be created by the Micro Artist Studio. This remarkable studio has been responsible for many of the company’s great achievements, including the Credor Spring Drive Sonnerie and Minute Repeater.
Spring Drive 5 Days
Caliber 9RA2
Concentrating all the different technologies enhanced and refined since the development of Grand Seiko's exclusive Caliber 9R Spring Drive movement led to the birth of next-generation spring drive movement, Caliber 9RA5, in 2020. It is the power reserve indicator of that self-same Caliber 9RA5 that has been placed on the case back of the Caliber 9RA2.
Automatic Spring Drive 3-Day GMT
Caliber 9R66
In 2006, just two years after the completion of Caliber 9R65, Grand Seiko's first 9R Spring Drive movement with a GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) function, Caliber 9R66, was unveiled.
9F Quartz
A quartz movement depends on a battery as a power source. The battery sends electricity to a quartz oscillator, which vibrates at precisely 32,768 times per second. An integrated circuit (IC) detects these vibrations and sends out an accurate time signal every second to the step motor. The step motor activates in accordance with this time signal, accurately rotating a series of gears and the watch hands. Caliber 9F redefines the quartz watch, delivering higher performance and greater durability. It is a quartz caliber that truly merits the name Grand Seiko.
Manual-winding Mechanical Hi-Beat 36000 80 Hours
Caliber 9SA4
Striving to create the ultimate hand-winding experience.
Though the new Caliber 9SA4 has many of the same characteristics as 9SA5 which was released in 2020, nearly 40 percent of the base movement has been redesigned and reconstructed with careful consideration given to the tactile, aural, and visual sensations experienced during winding. The movement’s click, the part that holds the ratchet wheel to prevent the unwinding of the mainsprings, and the click spring, have been tailored to perfect their feel and sound, and the crown stops when the movement is fully powered. Also, a power-reserve indicator on one of the movement bridges tells the watch’s state of wind.
A beautiful movement inspired by the nature of Shizukuishi
The Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, where Grand Seiko mechanical watches are made, is surrounded by rich nature, an ever-present source of inspiration. The click in Caliber 9SA4 is in the shape of a wagtail, a bird recognized as special to Morioka, a city close to the studio. Thanks to the redesign of the movement, the bird-like pecking motion of the click is visible to enjoy during the hand-winding process. Together with delicate finishing inspired by the Shizukuishi River, Caliber 9SA4 not only showcases the very best of Grand Seiko’s mechanical watchmaking capabilities but also captures the beauty of the studio’s natural surroundings.
Hi-Beat 36000 3-Day Chronograph
Caliber 9SC5
A Column Wheel for Maximum Operability
The column wheel mechanism is used to control the starting and stopping of the chronograph function. This mechanism allows for smooth operation of the mechanism when the chronograph button is pushed, ensuring that the clutch (the power transmission mechanism) and lever components are not subjected to unnecessary torque.
A Vertical Clutch
Mechanical chronographs use a power-transmission mechanism to transfer power to the stopwatch mechanism. The vertical clutch mechanism in the Tentagraph prevents the hands from jumping when the chronograph starts. This avoids the deviation that occurs frequently when using a horizontal clutch mechanism and allows for more accurate measurement.
The Dual Impulse Escapement Increases the Transfer Efficiency of the Power of the Mainspring
The Dual Impulse Escapement is a unique mechanism which combines “direct impulse,” where power is transferred directly from the escape wheel to the balance, with conventional “indirect impulse.” Thereby, it transfers power to the balance through the mainspring with increased efficiency. Conventional wisdom decrees that the more you increase the vibration rate of the balance, the lower the power transfer efficiency. This is because the escape wheel and pallet fork cannot keep up with the high oscillation speed. This challenge is met in Caliber 9SC5 as it has components made with MEMS technology to increase the escapement efficiency. Connecting these to the twin barrels allows for 10 beats per second while delivering a continuous operation period of 72 hours.
Manual-winding 8-Day Power Reserve Spring Drive
Caliber 9R01
The 3 Barrels for Increased Power and Reduced Energy Transmission Loss
In order to realize the eight-day (192 hours) power reserve of Caliber 9R01, three barrels are used. They are arranged in sequence for expanded capacity. The whole movement was designed to reduce friction between parts that would otherwise lead to loss in the transmission of the energy derived from the mainspring. Precise manufacturing and polishing delivers reduced friction, as does the removal of the intermediate wheel which increases the efficiency of the energy transfer by 10%.
A Solid, One-piece Bridge for Enhanced Durability
In the assembly of most watch movements, the gears and other components are placed on the main plate which acts as a base and these parts are then held in place on the main plate by several bridges. For Calibre 9R01, however, Grand Seiko developed a unique system using a single, one-piece bridge. This system delivers enhanced durability and is, we believe, a unique design. The thickness of this one-piece bridge is some three times greater than any other Spring Drive caliber. Made possible by very high precision engineering, it provides a totally solid base on which all the components are secured in place more precisely. In addition, the greater thickness of the bridge enhances the durability of movement as the gear shafts are better protected in the event of impact or other shock.
Spring Drive 5 Days
Caliber 9RA2
A Slim Movement that allows the Watch to sit Comfortably
Caliber 9RA2 is 0.8mm thinner than Caliber 9R6 series. The slimming down of the components began with the oscillating weight, and the overall design reduced the distance from the bottom of the movement to the center of the crown from 4.2mm to 3.4mm. By moving the crown as far back as possible, the center of gravity of the watch is moved further down, achieving a comfortable and natural fit.
Achieving the 120 Hour Power Reserve, “The Dual-size Barrels”
Caliber 9RA2 utilizes this mechanism together with a revised wheel train gear ratio to maintain the high torque achieved in Caliber 9R6 while simultaneously achieving a 120 hour power reserve. Inserting two barrels of the same size would have resulted in dead space, so a design was made with two barrels of differing sizes to utilize the limited space without any waste. Although barrels experience fluctuations in the transmission efficiency of kinetic energy based on their size, improvements to the Caliber 9RA2’s two barrels were made to ensure they would transmit energy from the mainspring at the same efficiency, resulting in the achievement of equal winding and unwinding.
The Movement’s Finishing Reflects the Natural Beauty of Shinshu
The exterior of Caliber 9RA2 is meticulously finished and reflects the natural beauty of its birthplace, in Shinshu Nagano Prefecture. The design itself draws inspiration from the gentle frost that covers the trees in the early winter and the starry sky visible from between their branches. Caliber 9RA2’s bridge design represents the frost and is finished with a neutral-toned sandblast coating that achieves a calm but elegant radiance. The ridgelines and edges of the bridges as well as the screws are finished with cut diamonds that represent the twinkling stars of the night sky.
Automatic Spring Drive GMT
Caliber 9R66
Powered by the mainspring
Spring Drive is powered by a mainspring, just like all other mechanical watches. This traditional way of generating power allows the watch to be entirely autonomous, with no need for a battery or other power source. Winding the mainspring by turning the crown or by moving the wrist stores energy which is then transferred to gears and used to move the watch hands as the spring unwinds over time. By taking advantage of the high level of torque afforded by the mainspring, the caliber needs no other power to move the long, wide hands in the smooth glide motion that is Spring Drive’s signature.
Tri-Synchro Regulator
The core challenge for the team in the development of Spring Drive was energy generation and management. The solution lay in the creation of the Tri-Synchro Regulator, a device that generates a tiny electrical pulse from the motion of the mainspring and converts it into the power needed to activate a crystal oscillator and an electronic brake. The oscillator transmits a precise reference signal to the IC which applies a magnetic brake to maintain the revolution speed of a glide wheel at exactly eight revolutions a second. This precision is transferred through a gear train to the hands which display the time to a precision of ±1 second per day.
Caliber 9F Series
A quartz movement crafted by hand
While the majority of the world's quartz movements are products of automatic assembly, Grand Seiko's 9F quartz caliber is assembled entirely by hand. Two expert craftsmen combine their individual talents to ensure the high quality standard of each Grand Seiko 9F movement, with one assembling the date indicator and the other the rest of the movement.
Changing the date display in the blink of an eye
The 9F quartz movement utilizes a cam and lever in conjunction with the date indicator driving wheel as part of a feature known as the Instant Date Change Mechanism. Through this mechanism, the date indicator driving wheel builds tension in the lever spring as it rotates, eventually releasing the stored energy when it reaches the location of the cam and driving the calendar wheel forward in the blink of an eye. While some mechanical movements possess enough torque to deliver instant date changes, Grand Seiko was the first to pioneer the mechanism in a quartz movement. The task of aligning the Instant Date Change Mechanism to occur precisely at midnight falls upon Seiko's skilled craftsmen, who painstakingly set the mechanism by hand. In order to ensure that there is no situation in which the change occurs prematurely, the mechanism is set to activate within five minutes of the midnight.

A manually wound Evolution 9 dress watch with high-beat precision and 80 hours of power reserve.
This dress watch is equipped with the Grand Seiko Caliber 9SA4, the brand’s first manual-winding 36,000 vph mechanical movement to be created in approximately 50 years.
Today, the ritual of winding a watch is one of life’s pleasures. The simple act of turning the crown taps into the senses to forge a deeper connection with time’s natural flow. In the 1960s and ’70s, manually wound 10-beat Grand Seiko creations were manufactured in the pursuit of better rate stability and higher precision.
Caliber 9SA4 makes its debut in a new dress watch belonging to the Evolution 9 Collection, whose design represents a continuation of the Grand Seiko Style that reaches back to the iconic 44GS of 1967. Only this time, the Evolution 9 Style itself has been further refined to create a watch that instantly communicates the charm, elegance, grace, and subtlety one would expect of a hand-wound dress watch. Several aspects of the design have been revisited – from the prominent, grooved indexes, which have been slimmed down and elongated, to the multifaceted lugs, which are now narrower and have a smaller surface area. The watch’s center of gravity has been lowered to ensure the comfort and stability for which Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 creations have become renowned.
The case and clasp are made of Grand Seiko’s Brilliant Hard Titanium. The alloy is brighter than traditional titanium, causing the case’s Zaratsu-polished surfaces to appear even more radiant and achieving a sparkle of quality and beauty befitting a Grand Seiko dress watch. Brilliant Hard Titanium makes the watch not only light but also highly resistant to corrosion and scratches while commanding a hardness double that of standard stainless steel.
The movement achieves a higher winding efficiency thanks to a rearrangement of the gear train and redesign of the parts, so that Caliber 9SA4 achieves a power reserve of 80 hours with 15 percent fewer crown rotations than are required to achieve the same power for Caliber 9SA5 when winding it by hand. Thanks to its svelte movement, the latest birch-inspired mechanical watch is 38.6mm in diameter and achieves a slimness of 9.95mm.

Re-creation of the 45GS captures the heritage and evolution of Grand Seiko’s high-precision watchmaking.
In 1968, Grand Seiko introduced the 45GS. This watch came just one year after the 44GS, the legendary creation that established the brand’s design code, the Grand Seiko Style. Although the two watches were nearly identical in styling, the 45GS featured a dramatic upgrade in terms of stability and performance with the brand’s first manual-winding high-beat movement, the Caliber 4520. Today, re-creation of this milestone is born.
The original's angular case, which featured flat, mirror-polished surfaces and curved case sides, has been re-created using Grand Seiko's latest watchmaking technology. The dial colors and lettering are virtually identical to the originals. At the 12 o'clock position appear the Seiko letters, which have been made to reimagine the vintage character of the original. At the six o'clock position, one will notice the GS and Hi-Beat letters; the number 36000, which signifies the high frequency of the movement; and even the Daini Seikosha factory logo, indicating the birthplace of the original 45GS.
